Two months ago President Obama took military action with Libya. He did so without the congressional consent, and now has a some congressman out for him. Some just want to have a measure drafted in order to show they did agree with the action but wished they would have been asked first. Meanwhile others call for the complete absence of action in Libya seeing as it is a "civil war." The view many congressman hold is that President Obama's acts were unconstitutional, because he has disobeyed the War Powers Act, which requires him to get approval from congress within 60 days of making military action. Saturday marked day 61 of the Presidents time to do so. Along with presidents from the past, Obama holds that limited military operations do not require him to follow the War Powers Act. This stance has gained him more heat by congressman, reminding others of the fact that President Obama opposed former President Bush in 2007 for abusing the separation of power between presidency and congress.
One of the leaders in opposition to President Obama's actions is Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio. He claims that he does not want the president impeached as that would be a blow toward the stability of the nation, but he does want the United States to get out of Libya. As no story about U.S. involvement in the middle east is complete without the mention of one key thing, Kucinich also made a comment about the situation in Libya smelling of oil.
The CBT to go with this story is Sin. This CBT holds that Law is to resatrain the depravity of both the governed and the governors. The question that comes from this story on the matter is whether or not the President was within the law in his actions.
I will probably get a lot of heat by saying this, but who cares...
ReplyDeleteWe shouldn't be in Libya. Why are we helping out other countries with the lives of OUR people. I have respect for our troops, but I'm beginning to lose what little respect I have for the government. The government should spend its time and money trying to correct the problems HERE at home rather then someplace else.
Is this all for what? OIL! If so, America has become too dependant on it and it's just disgusting. Seriously we need to find new resources. I'm pretty sure we can do it too, we are not complete idiots despite what the show "Are you smarter than a 5th grader" causes me to believe.
If I recall correctly, didn't Obama promise change and hope? Didn't he say he would help end the war in Iraq? Some say that he is helping to end the war there, but then, why would he send troops somewhere else in a different war.
As the band the Fabulous Rudies have said in their song "Profit" "We've seen this all before, it's just another war, the only difference is, we loose when it begins."
I have a feeling that it will be Vietnam all over again.
Send the troops home, use the money and manpower to help end poverty here.
I undersrand not wanting to get involved with other countries affairs and that Obama didn't get Congress "permission"... but I believe that Libya was in a great state of turmoil. The people of Libya were being ruled under a strict dictatorship, and as soon as they rebelled their own leader began to kill them off. That is completely wrong. Situations like this need attention, and need help from other countries, including the U.S.
ReplyDeleteThere is a fine line between doing what is ethical and being the world's policeman. I personally, do not think we have to be the country that intervenes in EVERY situation. In this case, I don't really know how to react. Part of me says it was the ethical thing to do to get involved, but part of me knows the cost of lives, money and our own defense being stretched thin might outweigh the benefits...So, in other words, I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place...
